Discussion Question Week 5

By Jimmy Lavorato

What is news, how does it affect you, and would you pay any attention to this news if you were not enrolled in CJ105 right now?

The news is the information that is passed through the media or newspaper for our benefit. There are many things we are not involved in that can involve us. There are so many types of important information that we deserve to know such as any criminal activities near out areas, or any important financial issue that involves us. Although in the past I have not kept up to date with the news in any way besides seeing a few minutes of television news, I still heard a lot about current events through word of mouth. To a certain degree I think almost everybody hears about the news in some manner, save for people that live under rocks, because of how we are all connected on the internet and television, etc. Information can travel so quickly and efficiently these days that we are bound to receive at least some small amount of knowledge of the world around us. I think that when someone has a hobby or something that interests them, they will also be interested in the current events and news associated with that topic. We have internet sites where we can easily find current events on any topic we think of. There will always be some people that have no interest in what is happening in their world, but for the majority I feel there is always an itch that only newspaper or news stations can satisfy.

  1. Dear Jimmy, I liked your definition of news, but keep in mind not all of it comes from newspaper. Mostly I liked your post because it was funny. (living under a rock) Great work. From, Marina

Jimmy, I really thought your post was funny as well, I especially liked your line, “There are many things we are not involved in that can involve us.” It really showed that we are all connected in the world through news. I really agree that it is hard to ignore news completely, but think that it is easily possible to miss out on news items we are not interested in.

  3. Well I guess I have been living under a rock… but enough with the shenanigans. Great job on explaining your view on what news is! It was very insightful to the point where I just couldn’t ignore it… get it? Because your post is NEWS to me! (Giggle)
